Bal masqué opens Strumica Carnival

Festival participants will elect the event's Prince and Princess, who are part of the 'royal retinue' during the carnival night on Tuesday (February 16), when masked groups stroll through town to the homes of engaged girls until early in the morning.

The last weekend of carnival has been celebrated throughout Greece on Saturday and Sunday, as Monday marks the religious holiday of "Shrove Monday", the beginning of Lent in the predominately Christian Orthodox east Mediterranean country.
