Incumbent President Traian Basescu backed in the presidential elections by the Democratic Liberal Party (PD-L) won 32.44 percent of the vote, and Social Democratic Party (PSD) president Mircea Geoana - the candidate of the PSD+PC Alliance - won 31.15 percent of the ballots in the first round of the presidential election held on Nov. 22, show the final results the Central Electoral Bureau (BEC) announced on Thursday.
Greater Romania Party (PRM) leader Corneliu Vadim Tudor scored 5.56 percent, the candidate of the Hungarian Democratic Union of Romania (UDMR) Kelemen Hunor won 3.83 percent, Sorin Oprescu - 3.18 percent, George Becali - 1.91 percent, Remus Cernea - 0.62 percent, Constantin Rotaru - 0.44 percent, Gheorghe Eduard Manole - 0.35 percent, Ovidiu Iane - 0.23 percent and Constantin Ninel Potirca - 0.21 percent of the vote.
According to the Bureau, the total number of the voters listed on the electoral rolls was 18,293,277, of whom 9,946,748 voters cast a ballot or 54.37 percent.
There were 9,718,840 valid votes cast or 97.70 percent, while the cancelled ballots were 227,446 or 2.28 percent.
The BEC will send later in the day the report to the Constitutional Court in order to validate the results of the election and referendum; after the Court pronounces and the result is published in the Official Journal, the electoral campaign for the runoff vote due on Dec. 6 may start.
