Greek Prime Minister George Papandreou will be amongst the recipients of Germany's prestigious Quadriga award for 2010 for his social contributions and high-profile efforts to reform Greece's fiscal policies in tandem with efforts to avert the country's bankruptcy, it was announced on Wednesday.

According to the award's website, the Quadriga has been bestowed every year since 2003 on Oct. 3 -- the anniversary of Germany's reunification -- in Berlin to four personalities active in politics, the business world, social issues and culture.

Recipients are honored for their commitment to a future of enlightenment, re-generation and their pioneering spirit.

Government spokesman Giorgos Petalotis called the premier's selection for the award as "particularly distinguished', in comments to the ANA-MPA.

The name of the award refers to "Die Quadriga", the legendary ensemble at the Brandenburg Gate in Berlin.
