The Bulgarian prosecution decided it would hold Kosovo leader in custody until Saturday.

Former Kosovo Prime Minister Agim Ceku was detained Tuesday noon at Gyueshevo border checkpoint on the Bulgaria-Macedonian border, the Ministry of the Interior informed.

Agim Ceku is on the Interpol Wanted List for evading a 20-year jail sentence for genocide in Serbia. Belgrade charges Ceku with military crimes and genocide in Croatia and Bosnia.

Sofia City Prosecutor Nikolay Kokinov said the Prosecution Office would impose a 72- hour custody detention on Mr. Ceku. The judiciary in Bulgaria is supposed to review the materials concerning Interpol’s request and hand down a ruling.

Overnight Tuesday Serbia’s Interior Minister Ivica Dacic urged the country’s Ministry of Justice to immediately prepare a request to Bulgaria for Agim Ceku’s extradition.

The move should be made as soon as possible because political pressure is bound to be exercised for Ceku’s release, according to Dacic.

Serbia’s Ministry of Justice sent an official request to Bulgaria for the extradition of Kosovo former Prime Minister Agim Ceku, who was arrested at Bulgaria- Macedonian border on Tuesday, Beta News Agency reported.

Kosovo’s government spokesperson Memli Krasniqi said that Pristina authorities were holding direct contact with the Bulgarian government and expected Ceku’s release soon, Serbian News Agency Tanjug reported.

Spokesperson Krasniqi is of the opinion that indictments against former Kosovo prime minister have a political character.
