Tadic, Medvedev lay wreaths at Memorial Graveyard

Serbian President Boris Tadic and Russian President Dmitry Medvedev laid wreaths today at the Memorial Graveyard of the Liberators of Belgrade to mark the Belgrade Liberation Day during the Second World War.

Serbian President Boris Tadic and Russian President Dmitry Medvedev laid wreaths today at the Memorial Graveyard of the Liberators of Belgrade to mark the Belgrade Liberation Day during the Second World War.

The national anthems of the two countries were played during the wreath laying ceremony. Later they wrote in the commemoration book for fallen heroes.

“Our glorious heroes fought together against fascism. They won the most magnificent victory of the 20th century. May the Russian and Serbian friendship last through the centuries to come,” wrote President Tadic.

Tadic and Medvedev talked with those who fought to liberate Belgrade during the Second World War.

Wreaths were laid also by Belgrade Mayor Dragan Djilas and a delegation of war veterans.

The Memorial Graveyard became the final resting place of 961 members of the Red Army and 2,994 members of the People’s Liberation Army of Yugoslavia who gave their lives fighting for the liberation of Belgrade in October 1944.
