Serbian Foreign Minister Vuk Jeremic said today in Addis Ababa that African Union member countries are being subjected to pressure to recognise Kosovo’s unilaterally declared independence.
In a statement to FoNet news agency, Jeremic stressed that the Serbian delegation has been active at the meeting of the Council of the African Union and is making every effort to prevent cases of recognition, adding that results are satisfactory so far but the coming weeks will determine the success of these efforts.
This is a battle between David and Goliath. Our power, funds and influence are insignificant in comparison but truth, justice and international law are on our side. We are making every effort to prevent more countries from recognising Kosovo, said the Foreign Minister.
He said that at the meeting of the African Union the Serbian delegation witnessed the well organised campaign which is aimed at increasing the number of countries that recognise the independence of Kosovo.
Jeremic said that the pressure is being exerted on several dozens of African countries before the International Court of Justice in The Hague declares its advisory opinion on the legality of the unilateral proclamation of Kosovo independence.
He said that the Serbian delegation has had many meetings and has done everything in its power to prevent recognitions of Kosovo independence by foreign states, and it will continue to do so at future meetings with delegations of African states, but he added that the danger has not been removed yet.
Jeremic had several bilateral talks in Addis Ababa with foreign ministers of African states.
He met with foreign ministers of Ethiopia, Libya, South African Republic, Angola, Somalia, Ghana, Nigeria, Botswana, Central African Republic, Uganda, Zimbabwe, Benin, Kenya, Sao Tome and Principe, Chad and Burundi.
