Minister of Foreign Affairs Vuk Jeremic announced in New York today that Serbia will continue with its well-prepared, balanced and active foreign policy, which implies strengthening and furthering relations with the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM).

Speaking at a NAM forum, Jeremic reiterated Belgrade’s readiness to host a celebration of the 50th anniversary of the movement.

Serbia is proud of the role it played in the history of the countries of the Non-Aligned Movement and is ready to be further engaged in this respect in the decades to come, he noted.

If one of the events marking the anniversary of the first NAM summit is indeed held in Belgrade, a city which is a symbol of the beginning of NAM, this will be an additional impulse to the promotion of the fundamental principles of non-aligned countries, Jeremic observed.

For us, this will not only be a token of respect to our heritage, or simply an affirmation of traditional relations. For us this will confirm that international stability and prosperity cannot be consolidated while at the same time disregarding the stances of a majority of peoples in the global proportion of nations, who are represented in NAM, Jeremic declared.

He also explained why Serbia will continue conducting a well-prepared, balanced and active foreign policy which also implies stronger and deeper relations with NAM.

This is our choice as a sovereign nation, resolved to play a dignified part on the global stage, regardless of the strength of our economic power and independently of current divisions in the world, Jeremic concluded.
