Political Director of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Borislav Stefanovic said today that during the preparation of its resolution, which it has submitted to the UN General Assembly, Serbia had had consultations with all the relevant international factors, including the EU, with which it does not want to have confrontation.

In a statement to Fonet news agency, Stefanovic outlined that during the consultations Serbia accepted some suggestions and received support from some EU countries. He stressed that no country, not even the United Kingdom, can speak on behalf of the EU.

The EU did not point to any problems with the text of Serbia’s resolution, he observed. This text is a good basis for wider support in the EU and among UN member states, Stefanovic underlined.

The text of the resolution reflects real needs and protects Serbia’s national interests. While making it, Serbia was guided first of all by its own interests and it took into account suggestions obtained during the consultations held in Brussels.

The Political Director of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs explained that the text of the resolution confirms the essence and what has remained unresolved after the decision of the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in The Hague. It reaffirms the strength and consistency of international principles.

The resolution calls on all sides to discuss unresolved issues by starting new dialogue.

Stefanovic stated that the EU respects the dynamics of Serbia’s European Integration, which is sometimes slowed down by problems that exist within the EU itself and added that this should not be linked to the question of Kosovo-Metohija.

This is Serbia’s internal issue which Serbia is trying to resolve in the shortest time possible.

It is a fact that there is no consent on Kosovo within the EU and that some member states do not share Serbia’s position on this matter, Stefanovic noted, but this cannot be defined as the EU´s general stance on the Kosovo situation.

We are satisfied that this resolution reflects the interests of all, even the EU, and our aim is to get as many votes as possible at the vote in the UN General Assembly, Stefanovic pointed out.

This will not be easy in any case and there are no guarantees that Serbia’s resolution will be voted for, Stefanovic concluded.
